The Stories

Doug Honeyman was born in Vancouver, B.C. on September 15, 1945. He grew up on a dairy farm on B.C.'s lower mainland. Growing up he was involved in curling, scuba diving, hockey, hunting and motorcycles. He joined the Force on January 20, 1966 at New Westminster, B.C.

He was stationed to various points in K Division - Alberta, sometimes more than once, including Edmonton, Whitecourt, Leduc, Viking, St. Paul, Forestburg, Evansburg, Stony Plain, Leduc and back to Stony Plain where he retired in September 2005, having served 39 years 8 months.

During his service, Doug was involved in every community he lived in through coaching minor hockey, Scouts Canada and curling. His career was focused on Traffic Services. He was a founding member of the RCMP Supercops Racing Team which brought the Street Legal Program into Canada. This was the program that got kids off the street and onto the racetrack to race against the police. The program focused on staying in school, staying away from drugs and alcohol and building friendly relationships with the police. The program stretched from British Columbia through Alberta and Saskatchewan and required an enormous sacrifice of personal time. Over 270 race dates & static displays were staged.

Because of this commitment, Doug was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also the recipient of the RCMP Long Service Medal with 35 year bar, the Alberta 25 Year Service Medal, Alberta Emergency Services Medal with 22 & 32 year bars, Honourable Mention for National Police Award for his outstanding contribution to traffic safety through the creation and implementation of the "Street Legal Program - Supercops Racing Society".

While in Whitecourt, Doug met his wife Sheila. They were married 53 years and blessed with two children, a son Derek and a daughter Erin. The family expanded to include Erin's husband Scott and their son Grayson.

Doug's retirement years included a lot of travel within North America. When his health issues resurfaced, he took a positive approach and focused on his loves: like reading, working on puzzles, local camping in his motorhome and appreciating a good wine, beer or G&T. During his long, courageous health battle, Doug never complained and never lost his sense of humor.

Doug lost his battle on September 22, 2021. Duty Done.
