The Stories
PSD “Blueboy” excelled in not only the police work, but also these educational demonstrations that leant legitimacy to a way of investigating that was perceived as brand new and some weren’t sure about but had actually been very successful for decades. Another letter dated February 1951 was of a more emotional nature, conveying a couple’s deep appreciation for the presence of PSD “Blueboy” at a youth event and the wonderful time their young son had with the interaction. Shortly after the event, their son passed away from cancer and they felt moved to write to PSD “Blueboy” and his handler thanking them for the memories created in that moment. Inspector Buchanan noted in an accompanying memorandum: “Instances of unselfish attention to the well-being of those less fortunate than ourselves go far towards fostering good relationships between the public and the Force.” PSD “Blueboy” served the Force well not only as a skilled tracker but, rarer still, as an ambassador for dog teams everywhere.
