Story:

In 1973 a young nurse with 10 years of experience at the General Hospital in Regina was asked and then sent on a two week temporary tour of duty at the RCMP Post Hospital at “Depot” Division. She reported for duty on a cold winter day in January. Those two weeks turned into 32 years with the Force. First, as public service employee at the twelve-bed Post Hospital where her duties consisted of: Assisting the Doctor with sick parade, immunizations, treating and triaging all new injuries and medical conditions and of course, submitting daily reports to the Division A&P Officer.

As a training centre, there were inevitable injuries. Anything from strains and pains, broken bones to flues, colds, elevated temperatures, gastros, allergic reactions to immunizations, etc. For eleven years Iris was a key player in an era of change at “Depot” Division and literally touched every one who served there during those years: Touching lives that would affect her own.

In 1984 Iris transferred to “F” Division where she would convert to Civilian Member, Reg. # C4224.

As the Occupational Health Nurse at “F” Division, Iris focused on ensuring tri-annual medicals were completed, as well as annual URT & ERT medicals, medical clearances for isolated posts and UN deployments, updating & recording immunizations and ensuring documentation for all duty related injuries. Iris travelled the entire province of Saskatchewan three times in one year in the mid 1990’s, administering a vaccine (a series of three shots) to immunize all members against Hepatitis B and the following year, to Isolated Posts for Hepatitis A shots. Every October, for six years she also visited all Detachments and isolated Posts administering flu immunizations.

Iris also assisted HQ in Ottawa with research in the development of P.A.R.E. which was adopted as a physical requirement for cadets and members. She also served as the CPR/First Aid: Coordinator for “F” Division and was a qualified CPR/First Aid Instructor as well as an AED Instructor & Trainer. She trained and assisted detachment members to train others at the Field level and ensured CPR/First AID qualifications were current.

In 2002 Iris was presented with the St. John’s medal as a serving member of the order of St. John by the Lieutenant Governor.

Iris worked with three different Doctors during her 32 year career and had this to say about her time in the Force: “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝘾𝙈𝙋 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙛𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙯𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙛𝙤𝙧.
