Story:
Ronald charles Ferguson (born 28 January, 1940) Retired S/Sgt.
During the war years, I lived with my mother and grandparents in Russel, Manitoba. Following the return of my father from WW2, we moved to the family farm near
Angusville, Manitoba, where I went to school until graduating. After trying to make a living on the farm, I decided to join the RCMP. I was sworn in in Winnipeg Manitoba
on the 11 April 1960, given Regimental Number 21419, as well as a train ticket to Ottawa, Ontario to join Troop #54 and commence training at “N” Division in Rockcliffe Park.
For the next 10 months we trained, rode horses, shoveled manure, cut hay between landing strips at the adjoining air force base, and were harangued by
instructors. Having grown up on the farm, I excelled at riding and later was invited to join the RCMP Musical Ride. Following training, I was given another train ticket for North Battleford.
The next two years were at three different detachments in Northern Saskatchewan, and then two great years on the Musical Ride. I returned to F division and spent the following years on various detachments: G.I.S., Drug Section and Federal Section.
I met and eventually married my wife Leona in 1964. Fergusons had three boys in years to follow. Our oldest son John is an RCMP Member, S/Sgt., posted in Victoria. Our son Don resides in Thailand, and Doug in Vancouver. I retired from the RCMP in January 1996 having secured employment helping setting up security at Casino Regina. One year later, I was with the Province of Saskatchewan’s SLGA doing gaming regulation inspections and investigations for 8 years. Next I was employed by the Regina Veterans to working at Scarlet & Gold RCMP Museum gift shop. When the RCMP Heritage Centre opened, I worked there for 3 years, and then was moved to RCMP Trading Post for approximately 4 years, until being forced to retire due to the pandemic at the early age of 80.
