RCMP Police Service Dog Sherman #772 During his working career:
PSD Sherman was born at the RCMP Police Service Dog Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta on March 13th, 2006. PSD Sherman was raised in Fort McMurray, Alberta until the age of 8 months old before being teamed up with Cst. Mark Murnaghan in Courtenay, British Columbia near the end of 2006. PSD Sherman and Cst. Murnaghan commenced the Basic Dog Handler’s Course at the RCMP PDS Training Centre on April 10th, 2007, and graduated on August 17th, 2007. The team then successfully completed the Onsite Explosives Detection Course immediately after the Basic Course in Calgary, Alberta. Cst. Murnaghan and PSD Sherman were posted out of the Training Centre to the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services. The team worked in the Comox Valley for approximately six months before moving to the Lower Mainland where they worked in Richmond for two years. The PDS team then moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2009 into a new PDS Explosives position.
PDS Sherman had his first successful track and apprehension of a suspect off Highway19 in between Courtenay and Campbell River about a month after leaving the Training Centre. Three Explosives PDS teams were training at the Comox Valley Airport when they were called to a pursuit with a stolen vehicle on the highway. By the time the PDS teams arrived the stolen vehicle had been dumped and all suspects had fled on foot. PSD Sherman was one of the three dog teams that evening to track and apprehend one of the suspects. All three dog teams tracked and apprehended three different suspects which is very rare for a single incident.
In 2010, shortly after being transferred to Saskatoon, PSD Sherman and Cst. Murnaghan attended the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and the G20 / G8 Summits in Toronto / Huntsville, Ontario, to provide security and explosives detection to ensure the safety of all involved.
In 2012, PSD Sherman tracked and located a missing six year old girl who had wandered off from her residence just outside of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. The PDS team arrived on scene at dusk and started expanding the search area away from the house. PSD Sherman located and pursued a track in a field that led into a small wooded area. PSD Sherman located the missing girl frightened and lost laying down in the bush. PSD Sherman was credited with potentially saving the missing girl’s life and the Detachment Commander noted that PSD Sherman was worth his weight in gold.
In his retirement:
Sherman AKA Churmy spent his retirement being bossed around by an elderly basset hound. His first introduction to the McGee family home was one of infamy. He was released into the house where he promptly bolted into the kitchen, plucked a marinating roast from the counter, & made himself at home with it on a lounger in the living room. We didn’t know what we were getting into. Sherman the German loved nothing more than a dog park with a good watering hole where he could retrieve sticks for hours on end - especially knowing there was a vanilla cone calling his name on the way home. He loved the game of fetch & was a force to be reckoned with if you got in between him & his stick, an entire bush at Terwillegar Dog Park still has a tank-sized hole through it. When he wasn’t running, chasing, & sniffing, he snoozed & watched his pack from that lounge he claimed as his own on that first day. Sherman grew old & grey, passing away at the age of 12 with his pack by his side. His ashes were sprinkled in that same river he spent his retirement days.
