The Stories
Edward Burton Stephens Sgt. (Rtd)
Edward Burton Stephens was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Canadian parents on 31 Aug 1939. When Ed was 10 years old, he and his mother, Edith Cavell Stephens (Burton), his father Edward James Stephens and his brother Ricardo Victor Stephens moved from La Plata, Argentina to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
Ed joined the RCMP in July 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He trained at “Depot” Div. in Regina Saskatchewan and then served as a Swimming Instructor until Dec 1959. He was stationed in the following communities in “F” Division (Saskatchewan): Meadow Lake, Radisson, North Battleford, Rosetown, Lloydminster and Bengough. Ed retired from the RCMP in August 1981 after 4 years at “Depot” in charge of the Human Relations Unit in the Academic Section. During this time, he attended night classes at the University of Regina.
From 1977 to 1981, the Human Relations Unit taught the recruits many aspects of Human Relations including Cross-Cultural Education and Domestic Crisis Intervention utilizing actors from Regina’s Globe Theatre. The focus was on conflict resolution, racism, and ethical conduct. The Unit hired many outside resource persons to bolster their lessons including Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Cultural Anthropologists, Substance Abuse Counsellors, and professional actors from Globe Theatre in Regina.
Upon retirement, he attended the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan graduating in the class of 1984. He practiced law in Saskatchewan and ended his career as Senior Crown Prosecutor for Northern Saskatchewan working from La Ronge. He retired in 2014.
Ed and Phyllis Lucille Green were married at Wawota, Saskatchewan on the 3rd of June 1961. She was raised in Cannington Manor, SK and earned her “RN” at the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina. She studied for her “ET” (Enterostemal Therapist) at Harrisburg, Penn. She became a Wound Care Nurse after her studies in Baltimore. She worked for many years at Royal University Hospital Saskatoon, the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert and at the La Ronge Health Centre. She was recognized by the RCMP for her role as the wife of an RCMP member in small communities as support for the Force in many aspects of policing. Phyllis died of lung cancer on 8th September 2015.
The couple had two children, Andrea Karen Stephens (Garry Holmes) and Richard Edward Stephens (Heather Stevenson and Clarissa Morales and four grandchildren, Tyler and Tanis Stephens and Jesse and Carmen Holmes. Ed married Edythe (Edie) Dorothy Grobb (Huffman) on 14 February 2019 and lived in Calgary until they moved to and are living in, Saskatoon, SK.
