Story:

Staff Sergeant R. L. Stevenson (Steve) was born January 3, 1911 in Lawson Saskatchewan. His younger years with his parents Maime and Henry and siblings Jack and Eileen were spent in Lawson and Riverhurst. After attending high school at Luther College in Regina, Steve enlisted in the RCMP in November 1932.

Constable Stevenson was one of last members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to have ridden horseback on the western plains. It was in that era horses were withdrawn from the patrol duty. Constable Stevenson was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1944, Sergeant in 1952 and Staff Sergeant in 1956. Staff Sergeant R.L Stevenson retired after serving 29 years in the force.

All service was rendered in Saskatchewan, “F” Division:

Regina “Depot” Division, 1932/33.

Pelly Detachment, 1933.

Kamsack Detachment, 1934.

Canora Detachment, 1934 to 1936.

Yorkton Detachment, 1936 to 1938,

Rose Valley Detachment, 1938 to 1944,

Foam Lake Detachment, 1944 to 1950,

Kamsack Detachment, 1950 to 1952,

Melville Detachment, 1952 to 1954,

Saskatoon Sub Division, 1954 to 1955

North Battleford Sub Division, 1955 to 1960.

It was while stationed in Rose Valley he met and married his beautiful wife Eunice Ella.

Following retirement in 1960, Steve and Ella relocated with their three daughters to Regina, where he joined the Robert Simpson Co. in store security. Steve also served as a Justice of the Peace during retirement.

Steve loved his retirement years. The RCMP Veterans group added to these times with his many friends who had also served in the Force. Hunting, fishing, golf, camping, family and friends and grandchildren – Cindy, Chris, Hannah and Rob – were his loves.

Too early in life, Steve was laid to rest in the Regina RCMP cemetery, September 1973. He was joined in peace by his loving wife Ella in 1985. Steve and Ella were preceded in death by their first born Robert Hudson. Their daughters Mary Ann and Margaret continue to reside in Regina and their youngest daughter Judy resides in the USA.

The cemetery, a most beautiful resting place, remains surrounded by the plains of Saskatchewan and dear friends of years gone by in “F” Division.

Steve was a happy man, accomplished, respected and loved.

THANK YOU Staff Sergeant R.L. STEVENSON , FOR YOUR SERVICE TO YOUR PROVINCE AND COUNTRY.
